Enjoy the Grand National with Steak & homemade chips

Who else is watching the Grand National today?
I've been living in the UK for 6 years and the Grand National is definitely one of the most British or (dare I say) English thing. Personally, my experience with horse racing is mostly with Hong Kong jokey club at Happy Valley (doesn't this place sound heavenly?!). In conclusion, I haven't got a clue what's going on. Sigh.  Anyway, usually when such things happen, I go into the kitchen and start cooking.

Today, I cooked steak with homemade chips, using the recipe from Gousto Cooking. Recently, I came across quite a few companies offering a recipe subscription box. I am currently subscribing Gousto Cooking and my experience with the company has been GREAT so I decided to share with you. First is first, here is the result of the food I prepared today.

Steak and homemade chips (recipe from Gousto Cooking)

It's been eight weeks since the first box and overall, I am very pleased with Gousto Cooking. One of the most attractive selling points of them is, of course, door-to-door recipe box which contains carefully chosen, fresh organic ingredients prepared and measured for you. Unlike some companies which don't deliver outside London, Gousto Cooking delivers across the British Isle, including Edinburgh (where I live). You can personalise the delivery schedule according to your own lifestyle: I am currently using 'every two weeks' service. I like trying new stuff but don't want too much damage.

Each box contains three recipes chosen by you. They have a wide selection of recipes from good, old British food to foreign cuisine including Italians, Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai and Middle Eastern as well as Veggie; in my mind, you can't really go wrong with it because 'you' choose what you want. In addition, you get a very cute Gousto recipe binder in your first box so that you can organise your recipe neatly.

The recipe offers a fool-proof, easy to follow step by step guide. I love the fact that it includes pictures and video tips on YouTube so you know what you are exactly supposed to be doing. I am quite an experienced cook (not no where at a professional chef level) but found these tips very useful at times. For example, by sprinkling a pinch of salt when chopping garlic, you can prevent chopped garlic going everywhere!

The specific price of the box depends on the actual recipes you've chosen for the box. Simply speaking, it's around £36/per box, meaning each meal costs approx. £9 (for two). For me, this isn't a bad price at all, especially regarding the gourmet 'organic' food and very comprehensive recipes I get in every box. I have a little tip for you to cut the cost. By using the code below, you will get £20 off your first order!

Whilst I am very happy with the Gousto Cooking, I had some issues in the past such as a mismatch between the recipe and ingredients, stale vegetables an etc. Whilst these issues are minor, I was very happy with their customer service team who handled them very swiftly and satisfactorily. Besides the right recipe was being delivered or a partial amount of money refunded, I also received a chocolate bar in my next box, too! Yum yum yum: I was a very happy bunny again :-D

It's been eight weeks since the first subscription and would I continue?

Yes, of course.

I would recommend the Gousto Cooking for anyone wanting to get involved in the kitchen action for the first time and of course, those who are quite fed up with their own recipes (I am the latter). After all, you can't really beat the experience of a VERY nice steak and homemade chips, watching the Grand National on a windy, rainy day like today...

Have you ever tried the Gousto Cooking?
