Today, I'd like to share my discovery of affordable, yet soft and very beautiful Royal Langnickel makeup brushes which are potentially better than Real Techniques brushes.
I was hunting for a GOOD affordable makeup brushes for a while. I love Real Techniques brushes but mine are getting quite old now and it's time to replace. I think it's been almost a year since I've been thinking about this but it has not been an easy journey to find the one as good as Real Techniques. I particularly like RT's buffing brush & contour brush from the core collection, blush brush, setting brush and expert face brush which can be purchased separately. These are the most used ones in my collections, therefore need to be replaced. The sad part is that I can't do so because the first two are from the core collection which means I have to buy the whole set. The price of the core collection isn't too dear as it has four brushes but I do not find the other two brushes (foundation and concealer brush) as useful. I actually hate them.
In addition, over the year, I've heard a lot about Zoeva brushes, especially Rose Golden set; very attractive, indeed. Zoeva has just released the Rose Golden Vol 2 whose brush handles are very cute baby pink. The price isn't too bad; considering the fact that you get 8 very soft and functional brushes, £56.95 doesn't sound too bad. For the longest time, I just couldn't decide which set I should get: Vol 1 or Vol 2?
Then, I came across Royal Langnickel makeup brush. What attracted me most to their brushes is the fact that it is 100% vegan and it offers a range of colours in terms of brush handles and brush bags. I chose two sets from their MODA Perfect Mineral range. All together, it has six different colours including black, white, red, blue and purple. I don't normally go for purple stuff but for some reason, I decided to go for purple. I was worried that the pictures on their website might be misleading but now that I have these brushes in hands, I am actually very happy that I chose the purple sets.
What I like about MODA range in particular is that:
- it includes both face and eye brushes;
- brush handles are quite short; thus, good for travel; and
- it comes with a brush case/bag which holds brushes straight up.
In conclusion,
I love it!
Let's discuss these brushes in detail.
1. 6pc Professional Brush Set
6 pc Professional Makeup Brush Set |
This set contains:
- Duo Fiber brush which creates an airbrush-like finish on the skin when used with powder, liquid or cream products;
- Power brush which is ideal for applying all over powder;
- Crease and Smudger brush which is perfect for precision bleeding and detail;
- Brow brush which is perfect for eyebrows or eyeliner; and
- Eye Shader brush which can be sued to build intense colour on the eyelid.
The set actually have five brushes which means that the 6th pc is the brush case. This is the same for the other set.
2. 7 pc Professional Makeup Brush set

This price of this set is as the same as the first set, £15.99 but as I mentioned earlier, I only paid £7.99 for mine.
The set includes:
- Powder brush (same as before);
- Foundation brush which is perfect for liquid or cream foundation;
- Angle Shader brush which can be used to apply eye shadow evenly;
- Smokey Eye brush which can be used to apply shadow close to the lash line, extending slightly at the outer corner;
- Brow brush (same as before); and
- Lip brush which can be sued to achieve smooth even lipstick application.
I find Angle Shader brush a bit too big for my (oriental asian) eyes but everything else is good. Usually, I don't use the brushes according to their names; I just do whatever I think they are suitable. For example, I use most of my lip brushes for concealer including Royal Langnickel's and so far it works marvellously.
It is true that the two sets do offer a couple of overlaps (Power and Brow brushes) but I would still order two because I don't think I can do my makeup without one or the other. Having two powder brushes are nice because I can use one for blush and contour. Having two angled (brow) brushes are good because I can use one for gel eyeliner. I really like Royal Langnickel's brow brush because it's quite small and soft, and has a good grip, so that I can use for both eye brow AND eye line. If you've ever seen Real Techniques brow brush, you will know what I am saying. Some brow brushes are quite big and stiff; quite useless, I say.
One final thought: I am not sure I would ever use the case these sets come with but I like having an option.
I was actually attracted to there Love Is... Patience 12 pc Brush Set but was hesitant because it's RRP £47.99 (currently at £24.00). There weren't enough reviews out there yet and I didn't want to take a risk. We've all been there... This is why I started with the basic (cheap and cheerful) line and I am so happy! The website is still offering the discount so I think I am going to go ahead with the 12pc set which comes with massive powder brush which is missing from my collection! :-D
Do I think it is better than Real Techniques brushes?
Yes and no.
Yes because Royal Langnickel brush sets are slightly cheaper than Real Techniques and have so many more choices in terms of colour. They also have a SILK line for makeup artists, too. But, you can only get Royal Langnickel brush online which means that there is always waiting time involved as well as potential risks of wrong brushes delivered, parcels missing, etc. My experience with their website was very positive but you just never know with online shopping.
I would definitely recommend these brushes anyone who has just started building up their makeup collection as well as those who are looking for the replacement. Have you ever tried Royal Langnickel brushes? What are your thoughts?
